If you are working in a mining site or any construction project where the ground is hard and full of rock, you know that having the right tools matters a lot. One of the tools you’ll be choosing is the DTH bit. But with so many types on the market, how do you know which one is right for your job?
Here are a few simple but important things you should think about before making that purchase.
1. Know Your Rock Type
Not all rocks are the same. Some are softer; others are toughly sturdy. If you're drilling through granite or basalt, you’ll need a DTH bit that is made with tough carbide and a design that gives strong impact force. If you use a weak bit on hard rock, it will wear out too fast or even break.
So before you buy, try to get a sample or report of the ground condition. The more you know about the rock, the better you can match the bit.
2. Bit Face Shape
DTH bits come in different shapes—concave, convex, flat, drop center, and so on. The shape affects how the bit breaks the rock and removes the cuttings.
For hard rock, many people prefer the concave face design. It helps to center the bit and gives better control in tough materials. But if you’re not sure, don’t worry—you can always ask the supplier for advice based on your project.
3. Air Flushing System
When using a DTH hammer, air is pushed through the hammer and the bit to clear out the dust and rock chips. A good air flushing system is important because if the hole gets blocked, the bit can get stuck or overheat.
Kaiqiu’s DTH Bit, for example, is designed without the traditional valve tube. That avoids the common problem of nylon tubes cracking or expanding due to heat or pressure. You won’t need to worry so much about unexpected failures from this part.
4. Bit Size and Hole Diameter
Of course, you also need to choose the right size. Bit size should match the hole you want to drill. If you are making blast holes in a quarry or pile holes in a foundation project, you’ll probably need a larger bit. For water wells or geothermal wells, you might go smaller.
Just make sure the bit size fits with your DTH hammer and your drilling rig’s specs.
5. Quality of Material
This part is very important, especially for hard rock drilling. The bit needs to take a lot of hits, over and over again. If it’s made of poor material, it won’t last. Kaiqiu uses high-quality alloy steel, and after heat treatment, the fatigue life of the piston inside the hammer improves a lot.
Choosing a DTH bit isn’t only about price or size—it’s about making sure the bit fits your project, your hammer, and the rock you're drilling. If you're using a DTH hammer in tough conditions, the bit has to be just as tough.
You don’t need to be an expert to make the right choice. Just think about these key points: rock type, bit face shape, air flushing, size, and material. And if you're still unsure, your supplier or manufacturer should be able to help you pick the right one.
A good DTH bit makes your drilling job faster, smoother, and less stressful. So take your time, and make a smart pick.
